   • The 1851 Ordnance Survey First Edition shows Bootle clearly as still a separate village. It’s bounded by Merton Road, Bootle Road (now Hawthorne Road) and Litherland Road. There was no north bounding street (where today there is Waterworks Street), but Bootle Water Works was already in existence by this point.

   When was Bootle built?

   • Originally a small hamlet built near the ‘sand hills’ of the river estuary, it is hard to believe Bootle began to grow as a bathing resort for the wealthy residents of Liverpool in the early 19th century. For the arrival of the Liverpool, Crosby and Southport Railway in the 1840s and the construction of the docks, reshaped its future entirely.
