Joan (Annie Murphy), an unsatisfied middle manager, has a bad day at work: she's unhappy with her boyfriend Krish (Avi Nash), she just had to fire a coworker, Sandy (Ayo Edebiri), and her ex Mac (Rob Delaney) is back in town.
It came out of a frustration with not being able to use good ideas because they weren't original. Each of those could have been an episode but they weren't. The driver of the plot wasn't those ideas but rather the fact that the Simpsons had done it. The TOS thing was a legitimate driver to the plot in Joan.
