He graduated from the University of Iowawith a degree in engineering. He made his debut as a cinematographer on the TV documentary The Bold Men.
He was given the job on One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest after the original cinematographer, Haskell Wexler, was fired from the movie. He worked in the camera department on Deliverance.
