Bessie Smith (Queen Latifah) is a young singer from Chattanooga, Tennessee. She and her siblings are orphaned when their parents, William and Laura, die, leaving their oldest sister, Viola (Khandi Alexander), to raise them. Viola is abusive and vicious and Bessie's childhood is unhappy.
May 15, 2015 · In the first full scene of “Bessie,” the title character (Queen Latifah) is getting hot and heavy in an alley when her paramour goes a grope too far and starts to get violent when she refuses. She does not give in, grabbing a glass shard off the pavement and stabbing her attacker, before going on stage to sing a number.
A room full of rich white people, an attack by the Klan, facing down her controlling husband... She doesn't let them walk all over her. Given the treatment of Black musicians in the U.S. (even today), her refusal to let them treat her like shit--even if it's a small victory in the grand scheme of things--is refreshing to see.
