Situated between Coatbridge and Motherwell, 9 miles (14.5 km) southeast of Glasgow, the town of Bellshill lies to the north of the South Calder Water. It includes the neighbourhoods of Orbiston, Hattonrig, Milnwood, Mossend and Shirrel.
One of the roads of present day Bellshill is named Cross Gates to recall its historic roots. It is likely that coal was mined locally in the early seventeenth century, but the area around Bellshill remained agricultural and the village developed as a weaving centre.
