   • Bellshill first appears in the Pont map of 1654 as 'Belmill', originally situated at the east end of Viewpark and was formed by a row of quarry workers houses belonging to a Mr Bell who owned the stone quarry nearby. There are some other theories, however, in regard to Bellshill's etymology.

   • Bellshill was to be surrounded by collieries. Although none are named on our map, we do have lots of the housing – miners’ rows – provided by the mine-owners to accommodate their workforce. Some of the largest coal producers in Lanarkshire had pits here. William Baird & Co, of Gartsherrie, opened the Bothwell Park Colliery at Fallside in 1879.
