John Barry Foster (21 August 1927 [1] – 11 February 2002) [2] [3] was an English actor who had an extensive career in film, radio, stage and television over almost 50 years. He was best known for portraying the title character in the British crime series Van der Valk (1972–1992) and Bob Rusk in Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy (1972).
The combination of Foster's thoughtful, ironic portrayal, the picturesque Amsterdam setting, and a chart-topping theme tune, 'Eye Level', made the show an instant hit with viewers, its leisurely pace providing a welcome contrast to the car chases and gritty realism of rival crime dramas.

It is the penultimate feature film of his extensive career. The screenplay by Anthony Shaffer was based on the 1966 novel Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Leicester Square by Arthur La Bern. The film stars Jon Finch, Alec McCowen and Barry Foster and features Billie Whitelaw, Anna Massey, Barbara Leigh-Hunt, Bernard Cribbins and Vivien Merchant.
Their repertoire included thirteen plays (mostly Shakespearean but also included J.B. Priestley 's 'An Inspector Calls'). Barry's first role was as Lorenzo in 'The Merchant of Venice'.
