Nov 3, 2010 · In 1995 the Pittsburgh Food and Beverage was thrown into bankruptcy. The company was shut down for several months and its assets divested. Restructured as Clark Bar Company, the company operated until May of 1999, when it was purchased by New England Confectionery Company (NECCO), the oldest candy manufacturer in the United States.
The building which housed these two historical Pittsburgh-based candy companies was built in 1917 by an unknown architect. The building was soon bought by an expanding candy company called Reymer & Brothers.
Until last year, distributors like Penn Mac sold jugs of Lemon Blennd concentrate to nostalgic yinzers coast-to-coast. But not anymore. Byrnes & Kiefer, the 120-year-old bakery supply manufacturer who own the recipe, halted production sometime late last year. They refuse to comment.
The D. L. Clark Company was founded in 1886 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, now part of Pittsburgh, by David L. Clark (1864–1939), an Irish -born candy salesman. [1] In 1921, Clark Brothers Chewing Gum Company was spun off as a separate corporation.
Feb 22, 2023 · Reymer's candy manufacturing days ended in 1959, apparently the victim of nationally advertised sweets. They were bought out by competitor Dimlings, who subsequently went out of business in 1969. Reymer's sold the rights for Lemon Blennd to the H. J. Heinz Company of Pittsburgh.
