What mountain road trip would be complete without stopping at one of San Diego's mountain-side breweries? If you're looking for some great beer and an inviting atmosphere, these four craft breweries are perfect for you.

- Ballast Point Brewing Company. Starting out in 1996, Ballast Point is dedicated to experimenting with techniques and exploring different ingredients in their beers.
- AleSmith Brewing Company. This company is proud of its humble beginnings. Starting in a small, single-unit commercial space in San Diego, AleSmith was inspired by European flavors to create its brews.
- Modern Times Beer. This fairly experimental company is famous for its delicious hybrids, or what they call "Island-of-Doctor-Moreau-style mash-ups." The entirely employee-owned company is named after a utopian community from the 1800s (now known as Brentwood, Long Island).
- Belching Beaver Brewery. If you can get past the strange name, you'll find some tasty craft beers (and a lot of beaver puns) here. This quirky brewery is all about "dam good times," as it says, so all of the company's beers, from its light blonde ales to barrel-aged stouts, have an extra dose of personality.

- Modern Times Beer. This San Diego fave uses its in-house coffee roasting to provide specialty coffee-flavored brews. They also feature diverse flavors like Fruitlands Goose with passionfruit and guava and India Pale ale with grapefruit.
- Ballast Point Brewing. Since 1992, Ballast Point has had strong San Diego roots. Try their award-winning Sculpin IPA or a classic Longfin Lager. - Mujeres Brew House. In 2020, San Diego welcomed its first Latina-owned brewery to much fanfare. Located in Barrio Logan, try their Buenas Vibras Pale Ale at one of their events like pop-ups that support local vendors, Loteria Night or many other events designed to help and uplift women of color.
