They renamed it "Alice in Chains", probably to differentiate themselves from "Guns N Roses". Johnny Bocolas was at a party with some folks, and he coined the term "Alice n' Chains" as a play on a BDSM Alice in Wonderland and Guns N Roses. He was in the band Sleze with Layne, and Layne immediately took to it.
