Avengers: Endgame is easily one of the most eagerly anticipated movies in a very crowded year, and it's about to arrive later this week! It's the final culmination of 10 years' worth of Marvel movies, the blockbuster epic that will chronicle the fallout of Avengers: Infinity War and once again pit the Avengers against Thanos and pass the torch from one generation of heroes to the next.
As we gear up for the release of the fourth Avengers movie, here's everything you need to know about this ambitious sequel, from the release date to the cast to the trailers to what little we actually know about the plot.
Be sure to also check out everything we know about Star Wars: Episode IX.
Avengers: Endgame will be released in the US on April 26, 2019, UK on April 25 and in Australia on April 24. This continues the annual trend of a new MCU movie officially kicking off the summer movie season in late April or early May. The film was originally scheduled to open a week later in the US, on May 3, but Marvel Studios pushed the release f...
The fourth Avengers movie is officially titled Avengers: Endgame. Marvel only revealed that title in December 2018, alongside the release of the first trailer. Prior to that reveal, the true title was the source of much debate and speculation, with theories ranging from "Avengers Assemble" to "Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet" to "Avengers: Annihilation."
However, now we know the title is a callback to one of Doctor Strange's final, cryptic lines from Infinity War - "We're in the endgame now" - as well as an acknowledgement that this sequel is the culmination of every MCU movie to date. In fact, we recently learned that Marvel is now labeling the first 22 MCU films (Endgame is number 22) as "The Infinity Saga."
The first trailer for Endgame hit in December, 2018 following much anticipation for fans.
A "big game" Super Bowl spot followed in February.
And a second trailer hit in March, 2019.
A teaser spot followed about a week later.
Like Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and features a score composed by Alan Silvestri. As Infinity War and Endgame were largely filmed back-to-back, fans shouldn't expect a radical departure in terms of tone or stylistic approach.
They can, however, expect a slightly smaller cast this time around... or at least we think that's the case! Because Infinity War ended with the deaths of numerous MCU heroes, the cast in Endgame will likely be more consolidated. The goal this time around seems to be refocusing on the original Avengers roster from the 2012 movie - Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). The trailers place an especially heavy emphasis on Hawkeye, who has traded in his old costumed identity to become the masked vigilante known as Ronin in the comics. (Indeed, by comparison Clint wasn't even in Infinity War.)
This isn't to say the film won't also feature some of the newer MCU heroes. The cast will be filled out by other survivors of Thanos' Decimation, including Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Okoye (Danai Gurira), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Nebula (Karen Gillan) and War Machine (Don Cheadle), while Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) will return to Earth for her first team-up with the Avengers.
Also expect Thanos (Josh Brolin) to again play a big role in the plot, though the exact nature of his role and whether Endgame may feature a different lead villain remains to be seen.
Marvel is being even more secretive than usual with Endgame, to the point where we know surprisingly little about the plot of this latest Avengers sequel. Even the official plot summary is less than forthcoming. It reads: "The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame."
We do know that Endgame is a direct extension of Infinity War, which basically ended on a cliffhanger as Thanos succeeded in assembling the Infinity Gauntlet and wiping out half of all life in the universe. Endgame will focus on the survivors of that event (now referred to on Earth as "The Decimation") and the Avengers' struggle to find a way to undo that act of cosmic genocide.
That still leaves many questions, including how much time separates the events of Infinity War and Endgame and what role Thanos will play this time around. We don't know if Thanos will again be the primary antagonist of the story or if another mystery villain will fill that role. For all we know, the Mad Titan could come to regret his actions and try to help the Avengers undo the Decimation.
It does appear that the Quantum Realm (which factored heavily into movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp and Doctor Strange) will play a big role in Endgame's story. It's believed the Quantum Realm holds the key to reversing the Decimation. The trailers feature scenes of the Avengers wearing armored suits similar to Ant-Man's, suggesting the team will venture into this strange, chaotic realm -- possibly to utilize time travel to change history.
Again, Endgame is billed as the culmination of Marvel's "Infinity Saga" and the decade's worth of MCU movies released thus far. But even as the film will focus on tying up loose ends and chronicling the final showdown between the Avengers and Thanos, Endgame will also be focused on setting the stage for Phase 4 of the MCU. It's speculated that at l...
It's widely assumed that at least some of the heroes who died in Infinity War will be brought back to life in Endgame, even as other heroes like Iron Man or Captain America may fall. With Marvel already developing new movies for Black Panther and Spider-Man and streaming series for Loki, Scarlet Witch and Vision, and Winter Soldier and Falcon, this is pretty much a given.
Endgame could also serve as the first step in integrating characters like the X-Men and Fantastic Four that Disney recently acquired through its purchase of 21st Century Fox. That deal was only finalized in March 2019, so fans shouldn't expect much in terms of X-Men or FF cameos in Endgame. But don't be surprised if one of the post-credits scenes alludes to one or both groups in the same way Infinity War's stinger set the stage for Captain Marvel.
As much as Marvel Studios kept this sequel tightly under wraps, there have been a few notable developments along the way. Here's a quick breakdown of the Endgame timeline to date:
October 2014 - Marvel announces Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 and 2 as follow-ups to Avengers: Age of Ultron. Part 2 is scheduled for release on May 3, 2019.
April 2015 - Joe and Anthony Russo are announced as directors for both Infinity War movies, with the goal to film both back-to-back in 2016.
May 2015 - Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are announced as writers for both Infinity War movies.
July 2016 - Marvel changes the title of Infinity War Part 2 to "Untitled Avengers Movie," casting doubt on whether the two sequels are as closely connected as originally believed. Kevin Feige indicates the true title is too big a spoiler to reveal so soon.
August 2017 - Principal photography on Endgame begins at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta.
