August Wilson (né Frederick August Kittel Jr.; April 27, 1945 – October 2, 2005) was an American playwright. He has been referred to as the "theater's poet of Black America". [ 1 ] He is best known for a series of 10 plays, collectively called The Pittsburgh Cycle (or The Century Cycle ) , which chronicle the experiences and heritage of the African-American community in the 20th century.

August Wilson (April 27, 1945 – October 2, 2005) was an American playwright. His best known work was a collection of ten plays, The Pittsburgh Cycle, for which he received two Pulitzer Prizes for Drama. His works talk about the tragic lives and hardships African-Americans had in the 20th century.
Fences is a 1985 play by the American playwright August Wilson. Set in the 1950s, it is the sixth in Wilson's ten-part "Pittsburgh Cycle". Like all of the "Pittsburgh" plays, Fences explores the evolving African-American experience and examines race relations, among other themes.
