Arthur Lakes (December 21, 1844—November 21, 1917) was an American geologist, artist, writer, teacher and Episcopalian minister. He captured much of his geological and palaeontological field work in sketches and watercolours.

THE LAKE ARTISTS’ SOCIETY was founded in 1904 largely on the initiative of W. G. Collingwood, the well known artist, local historian and secretary to John Ruskin, to promote the work of its members. Members in the early years included Cuthbert Rigby, Fred Yates, Arthur and Fred Tucker and Hubert Coutts (Tucker), who was the first President.
Arthur Lakes was 33 years old when he found the Morrison dinosaur bones. He discovered dinosaurs at ten sites along the hogback (now known as Dinosaur Ridge), and made arrangements with O.C. Marsh of the Peabody Museum of Natural History (Yale College, now Yale University).
Still writing about mines, drawing, and painting, Arthur Lakes died in November 1917 in Nelson. His contribution to the modern geological realm is cemented over the doorway of the Colorado School of Mines Arthur Lakes Library. .
Feb 11, 2022 · He began collecting fossils in his spare time. In 1878, fire struck the prep school where he worked, and Lakes had to turn to fossil collecting to make a living. By then, he had already been in touch with Marsh, and began working for the professor, even traveling to Yale during the winter of 1878-1879.
