Vermillion City Gym - Gym Leader Surge

By Clayton Petras, Professor_oak, Samuel Claiborn, +109 more

Vermillion City Gym will be the third Gym you face after completing the S.S. Anne and receiving Chop Down. Here you'll face the electric-based Gym Leader, Surge. This Vermillion City Gym page is part of the Walkthrough. If at any time you need an overview of the whole game and its chapters, head back to the Main Walkthrough Page.

You can only enter this gym once you have gotten the Special Technique, Chop Down from the S. S. Anne. Once you've got it, you can easily cut the small tree blocking the path to the right of the gym to proceed to the entrance.

To open the door that leads to Lt. Surge, you need to hit two hidden switches located in the buckets in this room. The first switch location lies in the third column of trash cans in the third row furthest from the entrance.

The second is directly south of it in the third column, second row.

The trainers in this gym all use Electric types, so be sure to bring your best Ground or Ground/Rock types along. Think Diglett, Geodude, Sandshrew or their evolutions. The easiest way to take out all the -mites, -orbs or -chus in this stage is to use your Dig technique over and over.

There are three trainers interspersed throughout the various trash cans. Which order you fight them in will depend on how you approach the room.

This trainer has the ability to use a Full Restore on his Pokémon.

Lt. Surge, as you can probably guess from the trainers you fought to get to him, is all about Electric Pokémon. As such, it's in your best interest to use any ground type Pokémon you have available to you. If necessary you can always make a quick trip over to Diglett's Cave and snag a Diglett or Dugtrio for this purpose.

Once you defeat Lt. Surge, you receive the Thunder Badge and Lt. Surge’s Autograph along with TM36 - Thunderbolt. You can either teach it to any number of your Electric typed Pokémon. Having a non-Electric Pokémon with Thunderbolt can be very beneficial when competing in Pokémon Stadium

After you exit the gym and enter the middle of Vermilion City, you run into Misty. She recognizes you and compliments you on defeating Surge. After healing your Pokémon, she says she’s about to go swimming in the sea. She asks you where you’re headed of to next, and mentions that Diglett’s Cave is nearby, and that maybe you should check that out.

She asks if you want help finding where it is. You can accept or decline the offer depending on if you’re ready to head over to Diglett’s Cave, but we're heading to Route 11 next, which is right next to Diglett's Cave anyway, so why not?

  2. After beating the Elite Four, all the gym leaders can be battled again, once per day. We've listed all the leaders and other important trainers below, along with their Pokémon for the initial battle and rematch.

  3. The Electric-type Gym is located near the south-west of Vermilion City. After acquiring the Chop Down secret technique from the Captain of the S.S. Anne, you can slice the skinny tree blocking the entrance. Inside, there’s a puzzle that you must solve to challenge the Gym Leader.
