- Enemies to Lovers. The main characters start as enemies but end up falling in love. Why people love it: People love to see the sparks that fly when the characters hate each other convert to sexual/romantic chemistry.
- Friends to Lovers. The main characters start as friends and end up as a couple, often one or both of the characters has been pining after the other for years in silence.
- Forced Proximity. The main characters are forced to spend time together and fall in love during that time; often this can take the form of fake dating, fake marriage, being snowed in together, being forced to work together on a project, etc.
- Only One Bed. The main characters are travelling together and expect to have separate beds and/or rooms when they stop for the night but there’s been a mishap and they have to share one bed for the night; this often leads to sexy shenanigans.
- Enemies to Lovers. The smoky looks! The sizzling wit! The fiery sexual combustion that practically sets alight the only bed left in the roadside inn! Enemies to lovers is hot.
- Mistaken Identity. This trope is just begging for the madcap errors and shenanigans of a romcom. For a crash course in this bonkers kind of romance, start with Cinderella, make your way through Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night,Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, and Emma Orczy’s The Scarlet Pimpernel,and finish up with The Ex Talkby Rachel Lynn Solomon and Well Playedby Jen deLuca.
- Reformed Anti-Heroes. Once employed by women as a way to advise others about the travails of transactional marriages, this trope has found new purpose in the era of free love as a means of imbuing a novel’s characters with power.
- Friends to Lovers. If romance tropes were part of an ensemble cast in a movie, friends to lovers would be the sweet one with a secretly angst-filled heart.

A trope is a convention, theme, character archetype, situation, or set of circumstances specific to a particular genre. Some may call tropes cliche or overused, but I prefer to think of tropes as shorthand to let readers know what they can expect from your books.

- Alien Hero: A human heroine falls in love with, or is abducted by, an alien life force hero from another planet.
- Alpha Hero: The heroine must contend with a strong-willed, domineering, hyper-masculine, successful and wealthy hero. (See Mediterranean, Asian, Russian Hero etc.)
- Amnesia: The hero or heroine suffers temporary or permanent memory loss and is forced to start over and reclaim their identity. (See Mistaken Identity)
- Armed Forces: A sexy, dynamic hero in uniform draws the heroine into a relationship, but a career in the army, navy etc., creates conflict. The heroine may also be in the military and is attracted to someone in her unit or during a mission.
