- Hedgehog. A hedgehog is not a rodent, nor are they related to porcupines. They are in a subfamily known as Erinaceinae (originally known as insectivores.)
- Rodents: Chipmunks, Degu, Spiny Mice, and Prairie Dogs. There are many rodents that are also exotic pets—some more interesting and unusual than others.
- Short-Tailed Opossum. It may look like a rodent, but the short-tailed opossum is actually a marsupial like sugar gliders, koalas, and wallabies. Unlike sugar gliders, which have more involved care, opossums are solitary and must be housed alone.

- Pet Frogs. There are a few types of frogs that are kept as pets, and many are low-maintenance. Pet frogs don't take up much space and are easy to care for.
- Pet Land Hermit Crabs. Hermit crabs are almost as quiet as a pet rock but are still pretty low-maintenance pets. Like most other pets, enclosure cleaning is the most time consuming part of their care but this is only on an occasional basis for a hermit crab.
- Pet Tarantulas. While not the ideal pet for everyone, tarantulas are super low-maintenance. Tarantulas don't need much space, make no noise, and usually only need to be fed once a week.
Exotic pets often end up in our care after people realise they're not easy to care for (or once the novelty wears off). Others are rescued after they've escaped or been released on purpose. Some species can be difficult for us to rehome, due to lack of suitable homes or interest.
