Most need acidic soil, preferably free-draining and sandy, in full sun. Winter-flowering cultivars will tolerate neutral or alkaline soils. For growing in containers, use ericaceous (acidic) compost with added lime-free grit to improve drainage.
Erica cerinthoides is a fantastic evergreen heather native to South Africa. It blooms almost constantly throughout the year, bearing clusters of red-orange tubular flowers over needle-like, dark green foliage.
Easy to grow and pest and disease free, they are fully hardy with a compact, mound-forming or spreading growth habit. Erica (heaths) have narrow, needle-like leaves whereas their cousins Calluna ( heathers ) have flatter, more scale-like foliage.
Erica arborea 'Albert's Gold' bears bright golden soft evergreen foliage all year round, with scented white flowers as an occasional late-winter bonus. It's a great choice for growing in pots where it combines well with Erica carnea and spring-flowering bedding plants.
