Gregory Clifford "Greg" Montgomery is a main character on Dharma and Greg. He is portrayed by Thomas Gibson. Greg is the husband of Dharma Montgomery, son of Edward and Kitty Montgomery, son-in-law of Larry Finkelstein and Abby O'Neil and brother-in-law of Harry Finkelstein.
Greg is a lawyer by profession and a graduate of an alumnus of elite schools, Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard University, and Stanford Law School. Greg grew up in a conservative Republican family. Greg's life was hopelessly banal before he met Dharma, whom he married her on their first date. Since then, he has played straight man to the antics of his eccentric wife. Though his relationship with Dharma has been rocky at times, Greg has never been shown to regret their marriage.
Gregory Clifford Montgomery was born to the upper-class, wealthy Montgomery family. His father Edward Montgomery is a pristigious lawyer and owner of Montgomery Industries, with a plan to have Gregory inherit the company one day. Gregory's mother Kitty is a social chairwoman who instilled moral, boundaries, and ensured her son kept on the straight and narrow his entire life. She made up his bee allergy to keep him indoors where he wouldn't run rampant or get dirty.
In 1977, Greg and his parents dreadfully boarded the subway just as their polar opposites exited. The two families came face-to-face, with the free-spirited girl greeting Greg, and the boy returning the greeting. Their parents ushered the kids past one another, both making remarks on how much they detest the other class. The girl couldn't help but look back at the subway as she climbed the stairs, while Greg climbed onto the subway seat and pressed his face against the glass to catch another glimpse of the girl. Ultimately, Kitty pulled him back down from the window.
Spontaneous marriage
Greg encounters Dharma on the subway and he attempts to speak with her, but the subway leaves before he can. He spends the remainder of his day tormented by the thought that the girl is gone. He goes into his office to find her sitting on his desk, having recognized his picture in the newspaper. She drags him along to the Giants baseball stadium for the organ music and shouting with impunity, then next for pie - all the way to Reno, where they are married the same day. Their connection is instant and magical, mixed with undeniable chemistry. The next day, their fairytale romance begins to become real when they face their first problems - meeting the in-laws. Greg is shocked by Dharma's promiscuous, hippie-loving parents Abby O'Neil and Larry Finkelstein. Larry disapproves of Greg solely because he's a lawyer, though his short-term memory lets him forget that fact. Dharma's outspoken attitude clashes with Greg's upper-class echelon parents, Kitty and Edward Montgomery, who expected their Harvard-graduate son to marry a Country club member. They demand Greg annul the marriage, but the newlyweds love is stronger and they decide to give their marriage a real shot.
He is an upright, uptight, decent, though sometimes surprisingly open-minded man.
