The anime just use different breathing techniques instead of different martial arts, and instead of striking like a mantis, slayers strike like the elements. Of course, it has a fictional level of power, and so are most martial art movies. The elemental effects are not real.

For those that don't know, much of the mythology tied to Japan is demon or spiritual-based, lending itself perfectly for a series like this.
