From my personal experience, I have found that chess books can be quite enlightening, especially when it comes to understanding the strategic depth of the game.
I would probably be more selective about which books I buy these days if I were starting out, but things like Kmoch's Pawn Power in Chess and Soltis's Art of Defense aren't really paralleled anywhere online that I've seen.
