Johnny Bocolas was at a party with some folks, and he coined the term "Alice n' Chains" as a play on a BDSM Alice in Wonderland and Guns N Roses. He was in the band Sleze with Layne, and Layne immediately took to it. Sleze recorded a couple demos as 'Alice N' Chains'.
