May 1, 2024 · The song was written by guitarist Robby Krieger, who was inspired by a visit to the gravesite of the “unknown soldier” in Arlington National Cemetery. The song was intentionally written to be a protest against the war, calling out the politicians and government officials responsible.
"The Unknown Soldier" is the first single from the Doors' 1968 album Waiting for the Sun, released in March of that year by Elektra Records. An accompanying 16mm publicity film for the song featuring the band was directed and produced by Edward Dephoure and Mark Abramson.
