Night monkeys, also known as owl monkeys or douroucoulis[2] (/ duːruːˈkuːliz /), are nocturnal New World monkeys of the genus Aotus, the only member of the family Aotidae (/ eɪˈɒtɪdiː /).
First described in 1823 by German naturalist Johann Baptist von Spix, Spix’s night monkey (Aotus vociferans)—also known as the Colombian gray night monkey, noisy night monkey, or Spix’s owl monkey—is found north of the Amazon River in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
Black-headed night monkeys are usually found in lowland and hillside tropical forest areas. They are usually found in the higher canopy levels of the forest. They choose exclusive sleeping sites in the crooks of branches, especially in trees in the genus Miconia.
The night monkey genus, Aotus, includes at least 12 species and three subspecies. Learn about some of them!
Night monkeys (Aotus), also known as owl monkeys, are New World primates found across Central and South America, ranging from Panama to northern Argentina. Belonging to the family Aotidae, they are characterized by their nocturnal lifestyle and distinctive owl-like appearance.

Northern night monkeys live in monogamous pairs or in long-term pair bonding. Mating takes place around August and September, so infants are born when fruit is highly available. Copulation typically takes place during the night, though in some instances it has been found to take place during the day.
