Night monkeys, also known as owl monkeys or douroucoulis[2] (/ duːruːˈkuːliz /), are nocturnal New World monkeys of the genus Aotus, the only member of the family Aotidae (/ eɪˈɒtɪdiː /).
The night monkey genus, Aotus, includes at least twelve species and three subspecies. ANDEAN NIGHT MONKEY. Aotus miconax. CONSERVATION STATUS: ENDANGERED. Andean night monkeys, also known as Peruvian night monkeys, are endemic to the South American country of Peru, in the Andes Mountains.
First described in 1823 by German naturalist Johann Baptist von Spix, Spix’s night monkey (Aotus vociferans)—also known as the Colombian gray night monkey, noisy night monkey, or Spix’s owl monkey—is found north of the Amazon River in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
Night monkeys (Aotus spp.) typically live in small family groups consisting of a monogamous pair and their offspring. These groups are highly cohesive, with strong bonds between members. Both parents are involved in raising the young, exhibiting cooperative breeding behavior.
Northern night monkeys have specific facial markings that distinguish them from other aotus species. These include a triangular black patch between their eyes and black stripes on the side of their white faces.
