The Colombian night monkey is a small Latin American (Platyrrhini) species from the family Aotidae and genus Aotus. Prior to 1983, all night monkeys were classified as one or two species (Aotus lemurinus and Aotus azarae). At that time, chromosome variations led to the proposal of nine species.

First described in 1823 by German naturalist Johann Baptist von Spix, Spix’s night monkey (Aotus vociferans)—also known as the Colombian gray night monkey, noisy night monkey, or Spix’s owl monkey—is found north of the Amazon River in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
Aotus lemurinus, commonly known as the owl monkey or night monkey, is found in Central and South America. They occur from Panama to northeastern Argentina, and from Peru and Equador to Guyana and Brazil.
Between 1968 and 1972, the United States imported 20,869 owl monkeys (including other species of the genus Aotus), primarily from Columbia and Bolivia. Between 1976 and 1980, the number was drastically reduced to 3300 individuals.
