First described in 1823 by German naturalist Johann Baptist von Spix, Spix’s night monkey (Aotus vociferans)—also known as the Colombian gray night monkey, noisy night monkey, or Spix’s owl monkey—is found north of the Amazon River in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
The Colombian night monkey is a small Latin American (Platyrrhini) species from the family Aotidae and genus Aotus. Prior to 1983, all night monkeys were classified as one or two species (Aotus lemurinus and Aotus azarae). At that time, chromosome variations led to the proposal of nine species.
Azara’s night monkeys, also called Azara’s owl monkeys and southern night monkeys, are endemic to the Gran Chaco region of South America—a large area including many diverse ecosystems, from grasslands to savannas to xeric thorn forests and gallery forests.
Night monkeys, also known as owl monkeys or douroucoulis[2] (/ duːruːˈkuːliz /), are nocturnal New World monkeys of the genus Aotus, the only member of the family Aotidae (/ eɪˈɒtɪdiː /).
Sep 14, 2023 · Owl monkeys (Aotus spp.) have historically been a principal species traded for biomedical research. Individuals found in the biomedical trade continue to be sourced from captive-bred, wild, and semi-wild populations.
Reviewing the entire taxonomy and distributions of the night monkeys, Aotus, Ford (1994) carried out multivariate analyses of craniodental measures and pelage patterns and color, and also took into consideration chromosomal data and blood protein variations.
