A blood film examination allows the evaluation of white blood cells (WBCs, leucocytes), red blood cells (RBCs, erythrocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes). These cell populations are produced and mature in the bone marrow and are eventually released into the bloodstream as needed.
The tests measure the activity of three types of antibodies: viral capsid antigen (VCA), early antigen (EA), and EBV nuclear antigen (EBNA). The VCA antibodies are either IgM or IgG, and the specific antigens are important for distinguishing between acute and past infection, respectively .
