Anthony was born in Egypt to a wealthy land-owning family. When he was 18 years old, his parents died and Anthony, being a young man who had a deep passion for God, decided to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ to the fullest of his ability.
His listeners heard Anthony speak about how important it is for us to live every day in God’s presence. As a result of his words, hundreds of people changed their lives and bad habits, bringing Jesus back into their hearts. Anthony wasn’t always successful, though.
The story and tradition of devotion to St. Anthony of Padua began almost immediately upon his death on June 13, 1231. Thousands came to view the body of Anthony and attend his burial. His grave at once became a place of extraordinary devotion and numerous miracles.
