The Beaneater (Italian: Mangiafagioli) is a painting by the Italian Baroque painter Annibale Carracci. Dating from 1580 to 1590 (probably 1583–1584), it is housed in the gallery of Palazzo Colonna of Rome. [1]
Annibale Carracci (1560–1609) was the most admired painter of his time and the vital force in the creation of Baroque style. Together with his cousin Ludovico (1555–1619) and his older brother Agostino (1557–1602)—each an outstanding artist—Annibale set out to transform Italian painting.
One of the main characteristics of Annibale Carracci's style, The Bean Eater is like a manifesto of Carracci's early naturalism. Carracci shows the dirt under the fingernails even before Caravaggio, and his observation of the still-life elements reveals careful first-hand study.
With his naked torso he looks more like a classical god than a biblical figure, but this is Saint John the Baptist, a forerunner of Christ (whom he baptised). John lived as a hermit in the desert, preaching... Annibale Carracci was the greatest of the Carracci family of painters, which included his elder brother Agostino and his cousin Ludovico.
