Hopkins painted actively during the 1860s and 1870s. [3] Her best-known works are several large paintings made from her sketches. She portrayed a voyageur's life in the mid-nineteenth century. [4] Hopkins, however, remained relatively unknown until recently.
Sep 21, 2023 · Frances Anne Hopkins was an artist who sketched and painted Canadian landscapes. Her most famous paintings, including Shooting the Rapids and Canoes in a Fog, Lake Superior, depict long-distance canoe voyages undertaken by the Hudson’s Bay Company in the 1860s.
Inspired by British painter Frances Anne Hopkins (1838 - 1919) who traveled with her husband, a high-ranking official with the Hudson’s Bay Company, and the Voyageurs on three excursions during the 1860s, I channeled Hopkins and her work on my own odyssey.
The name “Frances Anne Hopkins” has long been synonymous with images of voyageurs of Canada’s fur‐trading past. Born in England, Hopkins arrived in Canada in late 1858, a young bride and new stepmother to three young boys, ready to engage artistically with her new, if temporary, home.
Oct 5, 2024 · Artistic interpretation. Hopkins’ artwork received critical acclaim for her ability to maintain accuracy and artistic aesthetic simultaneously in her paintings. Many of her works, such as Canoes in a Fog, and Running a Rapid on the Mattawa River were displayed at the prestigious Royal Academy exhibition in England during her career.
