Frances Anne Hopkins (nee Beechey) was probably taught painting at home, because she was an accomplished artist by the time of her marriage in 1858, at the age of twenty, to Edward Martin Hopkins (1820-1893), a widower with three children, who was the Secretary to the Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, Sir George Simpson.
