- Minutemen. This Southern California trio may have been inspired by punk and hardcore, but the band’s music may stand as the most unique, organic and unclassifiable of any artist active during the '80s.
- Marshall Crenshaw. While a band like the Minutemen embraced its underground status and in many ways made a conscious choice to work in the shadows of pop culture, the fact that an accessible, melodic singer-songwriter like Crenshaw toiled in obscurity was far more accidental.
- Descendents. For better and for worse, the punk-pop explosion of the last decade or so can be traced back to one common earliest ancestor, and it’s not Green Day.
- BoDeans. Perhaps no band from the Milwaukee area is cosmically allowed to achieve much in the way of mainstream success, as the only other '80s group I can think of from that upper Midwest town, Violent Femmes, certainly resisted normalcy in every way.

- Pavement. You can’t really make a list like this without at least including these guys somewhere… and we put them at the top. Why? Even though their albums didn’t chart very high, Pavement still gained a massive cult following through critically acclaimed records like Slanted and Enchanted and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.
- Sonic Youth. Before Nirvana came along and caused artists like Daniel Johnston to make the switch to a major record label, this band was the first to take that chance and signed to Geffen Records in 1990 with Goo.
- Ween. Known just as much for their experimental tendencies and unusual but humorous style as they are for their cult fan base, this band never really hit it big on the charts.
- The Replacements. Also in: Top 10 Animated Music Groups. It’d be fair to say that bands like Nirvana, Green Day and the Goo Goo Dolls wouldn’t exist without these guys.
