On August 31, 2014, a collection of nearly five hundred private pictures of various celebrities, mostly women, with many containing nudity, were posted on the imageboard 4chan, and swiftly disseminated by other users on websites and social networks such as Imgur and Reddit.
Beginning on 31 Aug 2014 and lasting a few weeks, the internet was hit with an event that became known as the Fappening, a portmanteau of happening and fap, internet slang for masturbate. Ignition was triggered when these two posts of naked photos of Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton were submitted to their respective subreddits.
And just to clear, I'm hardly the only person to be making THAT old-school point about private photos becoming public fodder (whether among 20 classmates or among 2 billion strangers), and now it's being made more than ever. Nearly the only instant cameras I see in Google results, and Google Shopping, and Amazon, are all by Fujifilm.
