  1. Dec 12, 2011 · As a purchaser of a motor, you have responsibility to let the manufacturer know the anticipated duty of the motor. To assist in the communication of this information, the standard IEC 60034-1 (Rotating electrical machines) defines several duty characteristics, denoted S1 to S10:

  2. IEC (the International Electrotechnical Commission) uses eight duty cycle designations to describe electrical motors operating conditions: IEC Electric Motor Duty Cycles. S1. Continuous duty. The motor works at a constant load for enough time to reach temperature equilibrium. S2.

    • Continuous Running Duty Cycle(Type S1): In this duty cycle state, motors are designed for a long run without stopping or resting for a long period of time.
    • Short Time Duty Cycle (Type S2): This duty cycle for a machine means that the motor has to drive load for a short period and needs resting time after running time.
    • Periodic Time Duty Cycle(Type S3 to S8) This duty cycle indicates how a machine drives load for repeating periods with work activity and rest time. Meanwhile, there is a ratio of on time (when the motor is running) to the total duty cycle time when the machine is on and off for a specific time, called the cyclic duration factor.
    • Non-Periodic Duty cycle(Type S9): In this type, no specific patterns for motor operation are present. It lies under type S9 of the duty cycle. Load and speed of rotation for machines both vary non-periodically.
  3. Dec 11, 2017 · Continuous running duty (type S1) For a motor suitable to this duty type, the rating at which the machine may be operated for an unlimited period is specified. This class of rating corresponds to the duty type whose appropriate abbreviation is S1.

  4. The duty type S1 can be defined as operation at a constant load maintained for sufficient time to allow the machine to reach thermal equilibrium. For a motor suitable to this duty type, the rating at which the machine may be operated for an unlimited period is specified. This class of rating corresponds to the duty type

  5. 1.2 Duty cycle S2: Short time cycle. The motor works at constant load, not long enough to reach equilibrium temperature. After the short time cycle, the motor can cool down to ambient temperature. The abbreviation is S2 with the duration of the duty (e.g. S2 45min).

The continuous load is referred to as S1 Duty Cycle. Electric motors can be used at various Duty Cycles, short-term or intermittent (S2, S3, S4, etc.). A higher power output may be achieved whilst used at short-term or intermittent duty.
