Oct 11, 1999 · Sony Co-Founder Akio Morita Dies at 78. On May 7, 1946, Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita founded Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K. (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corp.), which later became Sony Corp. in 1958. At the time, Ibuka was 38 years old and Morita was 25.
Akio Morita fell seriously ill in 1993 after collapsing while playing tennis at his second home in Hawaii. He was later diagnosed with a brain haemorrhage and returned to Tokyo earlier last month. He died on Sunday (October 3) at the age of 78.
