HISTORY. AFI grew from the seeds planted in the White House Rose Garden by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The American Film Institute was founded in 1967 as a national arts organization to train world-class filmmakers and preserve America’s film heritage.

The AFI Conservatory is a private non-profit graduate film school in the Hollywood Hills district of Los Angeles. Students (called "Fellows") learn from the masters in a collaborative, hands-on production environment with an emphasis on storytelling.
