Actin is a family of globular multi-functional proteins that form microfilaments in the cytoskeleton, and the thin filaments in muscle fibrils. It is found in essentially all eukaryotic cells, where it may be present at a concentration of over 100 μM; its mass is roughly 42 kDa, with a diameter of 4 to 7 nm.

The sclera, [note 1] also known as the white of the eye or, in older literature, as the tunica albuginea oculi, is the opaque, fibrous, protective outer layer of the eye containing mainly collagen and some crucial elastic fiber.
In humans, there are three major types of actin; α-actin is found in contractile structures in muscle cells, while β-actin and γ-actin are prominent in different structures in non-muscle cells. Actin proteins have a characteristic globular structure with an ATP-binding site and ATP hydrolytic activity.
