The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced its nominees for the 76th Academy Awards, due to be handed out on February 29 live from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre. Billy Crystal is back as host after a four-year absence, and boy did I miss him.

Nominees in most categories are chosen by specific branches of the Academy's 5,700 members, such as actors, directors and writers. All academy members are allowed to vote for best-picture nominees. The full academy also is eligible to vote in all categories for the awards themselves.

Below is a listing of the nominees, with blatantly biased commentary from yours truly here and there.

    • Dunkirk (2017) Dunkirk - Sound Mixing. Because war movies usually demand multiple sounds firing at the same time, the quality of the mixing is generally more noticed.
    • Inception (2010) Inception - Oscar winner for Best Sound Mixing. The layered sounds of Inception are almost as complicated as the layered dream world in the film.
    • The Matrix (1999) The Matrix - Bullet Dodge Sound Mixing. Sound team, John T. Reitz, Gregg Rudloff, David E. Campbell, and David Lee were the brains behind some of the best “bullet sounds” to ever hit Hollywood.

If only one film met the 8.0 requirement or was so above and beyond its competitors, it would be awarded a Special Achievement Award. This occurred for Sound Editing in 1981 (“Raiders of the Lost Ark”), 1984 (“The River”), and 1987 (“RoboCop”).
