[13] Dreamgirls received the most nominations with eight, and Babel came in second with seven. [14]
The Departed also won Academy Awards for Directing (Martin Scorsese), Film Editing (Thelma Schoonmaker), and Writing – Adapted Screenplay (William Monahan). After seven previous nominations, five of which were for directing, Martin Scorsese won his first Oscar for The Departed .
Nominations for this award are closely correlated with the Academy Award for Best Picture. For 33 consecutive years, 1981 to 2013, every Best Picture winner had also been nominated for the Film Editing Oscar, and about two thirds of the Best Picture winners have also won for Film Editing.
