Chapter 1 evokes all the classic images of a small, Southern town in the 1950s. People wave to each other; the natural beauty surrounding the town is enjoyed and appreciated; and churches dominate town life.
Although reluctant initially, Landon finally decided to stand for the election. With his best friend Eric’s help, Landon is able to secure the athletes’ votes and eventually wins the election. Once elected, Landon’s first task is to organise and attend the Homecoming Dance.
Jamie's slow, painful walk down the aisle is, indeed, "a walk to remember." In the last chapter of the novel, 57-year-old Landon reflects on the 40 years that have passed since his wedding to Jamie. He still loves her and has not removed his wedding ring in all those years.
