Chapter 4: Family Secrets is the fourth episode in the FX miniseries, A Murder at the End of the World. The episode aired on November 28, 2023.
There's a killer on the loose and nowhere to run with a storm closing in. Darby breaks out of lockdown and discovers the retreat may not be what she thought it was.
Zoomer is in tears as Lee carries him downstairs along with other guests. They are led to a conference room six stories below ground by Andy Ronson’s head of security, Todd. Lee blames herself for inviting Rohan to the retreat. Lu Mei attempts to comfort her, suggesting that Rohan may have had a heart attack. Darby Hart shares that Rohan had a pacemaker, suspecting that it may have been hacked. Hotel manager Marius was on his way to Rohan’s room with an urgent message from HeartFront, and Darby suspects the pacemaker company recognized a hack. The hotel's staff doctor, Eva, confirms the presence of a heart monitoring system, revealing it was taken out and plugged in on that day.
Todd returns with the news that due to the storm, police won't arrive for 48 to 72 hours. Darby asks Marius about HeartFront, but he refuses to answer. Todd instructs everyone to return to their rooms, remain isolated, and surrender their electronic devices. In her room, Darby is approached by Sian, who offers to help her see Rohan's body. Sian, knowledgeable about the resort's security, guides Darby through the hotel, avoiding security cameras.
In the walk-in fridge, Darby and Sian find Rohan’s body. Darby inspects the pacemaker scar and discovers a signaling device in Rohan’s pocket. Sian recognizes it and mentions a plan between Rohan and Bill. They plot to follow Rohan’s signal, discovering suits designed for extreme conditions in the hotel’s garage. They set out on a snowmobile to find the source of the signal.
On the journey, Darby and Sian discuss the deaths at the resort. Sian reveals Andy's hidden agenda and financial concerns. As they reach the summit, Darby sends an SOS signal, but there's no response. Riding back, they follow the direction of a blue light. At the shore, they find Rohan’s boat capsule. Lightning and worsening conditions force them to return.
While heading back on the snowmobile, the engine stalls, and they crash. Darby wakes up in a flashback with Bill, recalling their investigation into Carmen Perez's pin and their growing connection. Back in the present, Darby is dragged back to the hotel by Sian. In the medical room, Sian's helmet malfunctions, and a life-threatening situation ensues. Andy attempts to save Sian by performing an emergency tracheotomy.
After regaining consciousness, Darby discovers Zoomer’s peculiar reaction to sunlight, hinting at a genetic condition similar to the one Bill had.
