8 + 1 ⁄ 2 Women is a 1999 comedy-drama film written and directed by Peter Greenaway and starring John Standing, Matthew Delamere, and Vivian Wu. An international co-production of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Germany, it was entered into the 1999 Cannes Film Festival .
Thus, many of these archtypical women respond more to Emmenthal than his son. Greenaway provides a detail-rich tableaux of intangible theories. Earthquakes and tumbling coins remind us that love, like a game of chance, is erratic and unstable.

8½ Women movie review by Crissa-Jean Chappell P eter Greenaway's cerebral, sumptuous movies (which include The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover and Pillow Book ) look at cinema as a text -- not to be "read" but visually interpreted outside the word-bound conventions of storytelling.
In 'The Cook, The Thief...', each separate room in an elaborate restaurant has a color scheme of it's own, affecting the color of the character's clothing. '8 1/2 Women' makes a brief attempt at combining various elements, showing pieces of the screenplay with insets of pachinko parlors.
