I’ve only recently started thinking about Bruce Lee in my effort to grapple with the role of Asian Americans in media, and in the United States. But the problem with larger-than-life icons, like Lee, is that the more influential they are, the bigger the ripples they create in the pond, the harder it is to get close and find out who they were as an actual person.
In director Bao Nguyen’s 30 for 30 ESPN documentary, Be Water, Nguyen dives deeper than anyone’s gotten previously to who Lee was before icon status. Nguyen accomplishes this by gaining access to the people closest to Lee, including his widow Linda Lee Cadwell, and daughter Shannon Lee. And while Nguyen succeeds in telling a complete and compelling story of Lee’s tragically short life, I still find the man at the center of it all an enigma.
It’s impossible not to admire Bruce Lee. His charisma explodes off the screen and radiates from every television appearance. If you’re unfamiliar with Bruce Lee, Be Water is a thorough, even moving account of a man who self-actualized the fame he always envisioned for himself. But the film’s attempts to tie Lee to the Civil Rights movement fall short, and any insight into Lee as a person is passed over in favor of understanding Lee’s legacy as an icon.
