Part Nine is the 9th episode of the HBO Miniseries The Pacific. It is entirely based on the experiences of Eugene Sledge with the 1st Marine division in Okinawa.
The episode focuses entirely on Eugene Sledge.
Sledge's Storyline Okinawa , May 1945Sledge and the rest of the Marines trudge through thick mud as civilians carting their meager possessions walk the other way. He pauses to look into the sorrow-filled face of a little boy. One of the men asks if they're prisoners and one of the men says no, on account that they don't take prisoners. He explains that they're not Japanese, they're Okinawans.
"Look like Japs to me," the man says. Snafu corrects him again, calling him Boot.
He tells them his name is Tony Peck, and Leyden calls him "Pecker," asking to see a photo of his wife for visual stimulation. Snafu tricks Peck into giving him his new rain poncho by telling them that new ones are covered in harmful chemicals. They keep picking on the new guy until they pass a group of muddy, dispirited Japanese soldiers sitting shirtless on the ground. Army prisoners.
The Marines heap verbal abuse on them as they walk past. One throws a lit cigarette at one, followed by another spitting on them. Angry, one of the Japanese soldiers stands up and moves on Snafu, enraged. Snafu points the barrel of his rifle at the man's chest and tells him to sit down. He defiantly remains in Snafu's face. Then Sledge steps in and gets physical with the man.
Soon Sledge's squad has the man surrounded, guns aimed. One eggs the rest on, asking what they're waiting for. But an Army officer steps in and breaks it up, saying the prisoners are protected by the Geneva Convention. Sgt. Burgin puts his arm between the officer and Sledge as the Army officer demands to know Sledge's rank and serial number.
•Much more of Sledge's idealism is lost in this episode. However, Sledge regains some of his morals at the end of the episode.
•The only episode we see Sledge and Snafu switch weapons. Sledge switches from his Carbine to a Thompson while Snafu switches from his Thompson to a Carbine.
•Peck's attempt at goading the enemy to shoot him is similar to a scene in the hit game, Brothers In Arms: Road to Hill 30, where one of the characters, Leggett, goads a german panzer to kill him in a crazed rage. The outcome of these scenes could not be more different, however, as Legget gets killed, and Peck doesn't.
•Second time to see Sledge with an M1 Garand.
•When the men are on the beach, the sun seems to come in various directions as the camera moves around.
•This is the second episode to feature a campaign for one episode, the other one being Part Four.
Part Nine is the ninth episode of the HBO miniseries The Pacific, based on the experiences of Eugene Sledge in Okinawa. It depicts the brutal and muddy battle, the death of civilians, and the tension between the Marines and the Army.
The Pacific miniseries features the 1st Marine Division's battles in the Pacific, such as Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa, as well as Basilone's involvement in the Battle of Iwo Jima.
