The Irish R.M. is a 1983 television comedy-drama series based on a trilogy of books by the Anglo-Irish novelists Somerville and Ross. It is set in the turn-of-the-twentieth-century west of Ireland.
A local publican smoothly sidesteps the Major's objections to beer sales at the annual St. Peter and St. Paul's Day Games, which are being held on Shreelane land. Philippa offers to organize tea for the event, and unknowingly becomes part of Flurry's scheme.
Synopsis. At the Regimental Ball in 1897, Major Sinclair Yeates tells his love he is resigning his commission to become Resident Magistrate in Ireland. Upon hearing that she is willing to accompany him, he sets off to claim his new post.

Series 1, episode 1. The year 1897 sees Major Sinclair Yeates, an Englishman, arrive in a rural area of Victorian Ireland. He has married his colonel's daughter and has decided to take up a new career as a Resident Magistrate. Major Yeates quickly meets the hard-riding Knox clan, including Great Uncle McCarthy and young Flurry Knox, his landlord.
