In a special episode, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are dropped in the vast wilderness of Mongolia, then provided with some basic rations and all the flat-packed parts they need to build a vehicle which will provide their only chance of escape to civilisation before they starve or strangle each other.
James May and Jeremy Clarkson "secrely agreed" that Richard would never be able to drive "John" throughout their entire journey. He was given only seconds to drive in total.
This Special was filmed at the end of June, 2018. The trio, mainly Jeremy Clarkson, stated this was one of the hardest Specials to film, due to the rough conditions the trio encountered.
Yeah, I think one of the reasons why series 1 of the Grand Tour was a bit hit and miss was that a lot of the foundations of the show (such as the cheap car challenge you outline, the star in a reasonably priced car etc) were lost in the divorce with the BBC.
