Founded in 1898, it is associated with the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME Church) and a member of the United Negro College Fund.

Clemon was a student at Miles College in the 1960s when he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and helped to desegregate the Birmingham Public Library. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter appointed Clemon, then a civil rights lawyer, as Alabama’s first black Federal Judge.
