The village of Ivoryton, near the CT River, once produced 90% of the products made from ivory in the world. The village began with just 10 houses, but grew into a large factory town that still exists, unlike many similar towns where former firms left vacant factory buildings.

With a population today of only 6,500, Essex lies along the Connecticut River, just five miles North of its mouth in Old Saybrook, where the River meets Long Island Sound.
