Clyde William Tombaugh / ˈ t ɒ m b aʊ / (February 4, 1906 – January 17, 1997) was an American astronomer. He discovered the ninth planet Pluto in 1930, the first object to be discovered in what would later be identified as the Kuiper belt .

Feb 16, 2021 · He was inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame in 1980. He died on January 17, 1997, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, at age 90. A small portion of his ashes was placed aboard the New Horizons spacecraft, which was launched on January 19, 2006 and flew past Pluto on July 14, 2015.
