    • Cité de Carcassonne. At a distance of 95 km southeast of Toulouse is the magnificent Cité de Carcassonne. This UNESCO-listed medieval Citadel will blow your mind if you are passionate about history and architecture.
    • Gaillac Wine Route. The charming town of Gaillac is 50 km northeast of Toulouse and lies on the Tarn River. Easily reachable by train, the town holds historical monuments like the Abbatiale Saint Michel, a 10th-century Benedictine abbey, and the Maison des Vins, ideal if you want to learn more about wine and do some tastings.
    • Rieux-Volvestre. South of Toulouse, at a distance of 45 km, is the lovely village of Rieux-Volvestre. With a prestigious heritage, the village is nestled on the edge of the small Arize River.
    • Cordes-sur-Ciel. The village that impressed me most in Midi-Pyrenees is undoubtedly, Cordes-sur-Ciel. Located just 1 hour driving away from Toulouse, Cordes-sur-Ciel can be seen from far away due to its elevation (it’s located on a hill) and it’s really beautiful already from far away.
    • Albi. Albi might be a bit too big to be called a village, it’s rather a small city or a decently-sized town. Nonetheless, Albi a beautiful place and it’s definitely worth visiting.
    • Castelnau-de-Montmiral. Another one of the beautiful villages near Toulouse is Castelnau-de-Montmiral. It doesn’t have as many landmarks as other villages and towns listed here, however, it’s pretty by itself and in case you’re interested in fine dining, it has a restaurant included in the Michelin guide on the main square (prepare for pretty high prices and advance reservations though).
    • Montauban. Just like Albi, Montauban is rather a commute than a village and it has a population of 50,000 people. Depending on where you’re from, that could be almost nothing, however, Montauban is a bit bigger than a traditional French town or a village.

    • PENNE. (1-hour & 15-minute drive from Toulouse) The tiny village of Penne is topped by the majestic ruins of the Château de Penne, a medieval castle that’s precariously perched on top of a rocky outcrop.
